The worldwide sales of smartphones in 2013 surpassed, for the first time, the barrier of one billion units sold according to IDC, exactly 38% more than in 2012 and offset the large drop in sales of basic phones. The increase was mainly due to the introduction of new functionalities and falling prices of more basic smartphones.
Samsung remains the global leader with 31% market share, 1.6 points more than in 2012, followed by Apple with 15% and Huawei with 5%. Lenovo has been the brand enjoying a higher growth as it has nearly doubled sales on 2012 to stand at fifth place with a 4.5% market share and close to LG with 4.8%.
Although Apple has increased its sales in 2013, almost by 13%, the increase was lower than increases of its competitors, losing 3.4 points of market share. Let's wait if recent launches of Iphone 5s and Iphone 5c offset this fall in 2014.
