The ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has approved a substantial change in domain regulations, which will mean a major change in the way you navigate on Internet. Adopted unanimously at its last convention in Paris, the new rule will mean a relevant reduction in restrictions on the registration of domains.

The decision means that companies can create domains with their brands, while people could use their names. An example? Well you could create the .barcelona or .nike or .latevaweb domain, and obviously the .cat domain.

Companies will be able to obtain domain names based on their intellectual property. Behind this decision is a clear economic objective given that the registration of a new domain termination, a priori, will cost several million dollars. This is to say, that unfortunately not every company or person will be able to have their own domains.

At the moment, top-level domains (TLDs) are currently limited to certain countries, such as .es (Spain) or .eu (Europe), as well as for commerce, .com, and organizations with org. Or Internet companies with the .net. What has led even countries like Polynesia, island nation Tuvalu, has rent the use of its .tv domain to many television companies.
