After a year in the evaluation phase, the organization ICANN has just approved the .eus and .gal domains.
The ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the organization that manages Internet domains. It has just approved new generic domains addressed to different linguistic and cultural communities. The domain .cat was approved seven years ago, being the very first one domain of this kind. It is a domain addressed solely to the Catalan linguistic community. Brand new domains .eus and .gal are addresses to Basque and Galician communities.
These new domains will remind every day to the world about the existence of Galicia and Basque communities. Is expected that later this year or early 2014 the delegation contract of these domains will be signed. After the signature, people and companies will be able to apply for these domains. At a very first moment, it will be only available for registered trademarks and public and private entities. After this phase, everybody using the Basque or Galician language will be able to apply for these domains.
The .bzh for Breton community has also been approved.
