Google has confirmed today that its service of Google News will be closed in Spain on 16th December. This is a Google service that has always been surrounded by controversy and has led several media companies to take the company to court in a regularly basis without much success. However it has not been any of these allegations nor the fact that it is not a profitable service which has led to its closure. The real reason has been the new Copyright Act that will come into force on January 1, 2015 and that will require the payment of a fee to aggregator websites.
It is expected that the closure will have an immediately impact of 30% of total traffic in many newspapers.
Google announced that will remove Spanish publishers from Google News and close the service on December 16th.
